5 Common Types Of Commercial Construction Projects

The construction industry comprises various projects that contractors may develop, construct, and manage. These types of projects could relate to business, commercial, or residential purposes.

In general, contractors will have to consult with a team of architects, engineers, and designers. All types of businesses and corporate members can represent the client for commercial construction. As such, there are multiple different types of commercial construction projects.

For each industry and every project, there are many different requirements to take into consideration to meet the needs of the client. Chad Fisher Construction takes special care to ensure that we meet our clients’ requirements.

5 Common Commercial Construction Project Types

The specifics of each project are dependent on the needs of the client. However, commercial construction projects can be broken broadly into five categories. These are the following:

Industrial and Aerospace

Industrial construction is a specific niche that deals with the development of factories, power plants, warehouses, and other specialized facilities. In addition, it also includes the design, installation, and maintenance of the structural and mechanical components within these developments.

One industrial commercial construction project that CFC took on was the Hexcel Expansion. This project required an expansion of the Hexcel Corporations Burlington plant. It included a new manufacturing floor of 60,000 square feet, new offices, and an ISO Level 8 Clean Room.

Aerospace construction, on the other hand, focuses on constructing facilities related to operations in the Earth’s atmosphere.

The Janicki Aerospace manufacturer is an aerospace manufacturing plant in Hamilton, Washington. The plant specializes in making components for airplane parts. Facilities like this have very special requirements for their various operations.

CFC built the Janicki Industries new building, which covers a 90,000-square-foot area. It also has an advanced climate control system. The system monitors temperature and humidity and controls heat pumps. This ensures the perfect conditions for manufacturing carbon fiber components.

Community

The construction of community projects relates to developments that aim to serve the surrounding community. These could include homeless shelters, gyms, and recreational spaces where members of a community can assemble.

Some of the most notable projects that we have worked on include the Skagit Friendship House and the Helping Hands Food Bank.

The Skagit Friendship House in Mount Vernon serves people struggling with homelessness. It provides shelter, food, and clothing to those in need. The building includes a dining hall served by a full-service commercial kitchen, which can serve up to 6000 meals a month.

The new facility constructed for Helping Hands Food Bank aimed to expand its capacity and efficiency. It comprises 1,939 square feet of retail space, 1,048 square feet of office space, and 6,513 square feet of warehouse space. The designers laid out the retail space similar to a grocery store to allow the food bank to operate as a “shopping experience”.

Medical and Dental

Medical and dental offices require specialized facilities that meet the necessary medical standards.

The Benson Medical Group project involved remodeling their practice to keep in line with medical standards. The remodeling included updating:

  • two procedure rooms
  • six exam rooms
  • office spaces for three physicians
  • and a waiting room.

In Bellingham, we assisted the construction of a new dental office for Sweet Tooth Cosmetic and Family dentistry. We completed the project under 40% less of the budget that was presented by another construction company.

Agriculture and Food Processing

Sakata Seed, Burlington, WA, Commercial Construction Projects

Facilities associated with food typically include storage and food processing facilities. It is very important that these facilities comply with food industry standards.

A typical example of this is the construction of the Sakata Seed operations base. A new Northwest operations base was completed for Sakata Seed (formerly Alf Christianson Seed).

The construction included new seed storage and dryer facilities as well as a 14000-square-foot building. This houses office space as well as an advanced seed certification laboratory with climate-controlled germination rooms.

Professional Office

Professional offices are one of the most common types of construction requested by any business.

When our Chad Fisher Construction offices moved to the Port of Skagit in Burlington, Washington, our own team set out to construct the new facility.

The development houses:

  • Office spaces
  • A large conference room
  • Kitchen
  • Climate-controlled IT room
  • An entry reception
  • And a superintendent ready room.

A 5,000-square-foot room was constructed to account for any storage needs.
