Project Description

CFC constructed a new Environmental Classroom at Camp Orkila, Eastsound, Orcas Island.  This was a new facility installed adjacent to a wetland and pond which is used by the camp to teach campers of the natural habitat in the San Juan Islands.

The building is wood framed construction on concrete foundations.  The original design was for 3 classrooms with 2 moveable partition walls.  Due to budget constraints these walls were changed to wood framed however the steel support structure for the partitions were installed so that the units can be installed in the future with minimal impact to the structure.

The classrooms have overhead sectional doors which can be opened for students/campers to have direct access to the deck on the western side of the building.  The outdoor decking is “evergrain” composite decking with cedar & hog-wire railing system.  The exterior siding in cedar shingles which ties in with the other camp structures.

One classroom is equipped with a kitchen and the other 2 classrooms are plumbed for future kitchens.

The mechanical & electrical systems use the latest technology in minimizing energy use, these include remote accessible thermostats, daylight harvesting lighting controls, & on-demand water heating.  The facility has both a standard and ADA restroom to serve the students/campers.
