Project Description

After discovering one-third of its facility was built on unsuitable fill, Thrive Fitness in Anacortes, Wash., hired Chad Fisher Construction to address and correct the issue of differential settlement. In this particular case, the building observed differential settlement up to 7 inches in some areas. In order to allow the fitness center to remain operational, Chad Fisher Construction erected a temporary air and dust barrier partition wall to separate the portion of the fitness center not affected by differential settlement from the construction zone. Our team removed the storefront glazing, windows, doors, heating and air conditioning system, and electrical wiring to allow access to remove the existing failing concrete slab. Using helical pilling to stabilize the foundation, we attached adjustable brackets to each perimeter piling and fastened each one to the perimeter foundation. A manual hydraulic pump lifted the building until it met acceptable tolerances determined by engineering consultants. A new concrete slab was poured to mitigate any future differential settlement. Due to time constraints, Chad Fisher Construction used a special concrete mix designed to let the concrete cure rapidly in order to meet the desired moisture content to install the new rubber floor-coverings.  After the new slab was completed, we replaced the building materials and finishes removed during construction to restore the area to “like new” condition. Our crew worked outside of normal hours during several phases of work to allow the fitness center to remain open during construction.
